Walker, Wings top Bisons 8-3

4-run first inning, Darnell mound effort keys to win
April 22, 2016

Adam Brett Walker hit a two-run homer, backing a strong start by Logan Darnell as the Red Wings beat the Buffalo Bisons 8-3 Friday night at Frontier Field.

The series with Buffalo continues with a 1:35 p.m. game Saturday, with a post-game autograph session with Red Wings pitchers. Complete promotions details below....

After Wings starter Darnell set down the Bisons in order in the top of the first inning, his teammates provided him with an early lead. Buffalo right-hander Chris Leroux hit Wings lead-off batter Darin Mastroianni with a pitch, and James Beresford followed with an opposite field double to score Mastroianni for a 1-0 Red Wings lead. Leroux's wild pitch with Kennys Vargas at bat allowed Beresford to score, giving the Wings a 2-0 advantage. After Buck Britton singled, rookie Walker launched a 2-2 pitch into the Buffalo bullpen for a two-run homer and a 4-0 Wings lead.

Darnell had another strong inning in the third, as he set Buffalo down in order. This was thanks in large part to his third baseman, as Britton made a pair of nice plays. The fourth didn't start well for Darnell as he allowed a leadoff double, but he stranded him there as no one else reached base. The top of the fifth looked like it would be another quick inning for Darnell as he set down the first two hitters he faced, but Buffalo then put a rally together with a walk and back-to-back singles to make the score 4-1 Red Wings.

Leading off the bottom of the sixth, Reynaldo Rodriguez drilled a ball off the left field wall for a double. Vargas then drove him in with a single to right field and the Wings reclaimed their 4-run lead at 5-1. But the Wings continued to rally, as Daniel Murphy drove in Vargas to increase the lead to 6-1.

In the top of the seventh the Wings made a pair of pitching changes, going first with Dan Runzler. He only faced two batters, giving up a leadoff double and then a hit batter. Replacing Runzler was David Martinez, who worked out of trouble without surrendering a run getting a popout and then a groundout to Britton. Darnell finished his evening with six innings pitched, allowing four hits, one earned run, with two walks and four strikeouts.

In the bottom of the seventh the Red Wings started another rally with a single from Juan Centeno followed up with singles from both Mastroianni and Beresford, with the latter driving in Centeno increasing the Red Wings' lead to 7-1.

The Bisons chipped away at the lead in the eighth, when Matt Dominguez hit a two-run homer to make the score 7-3.

The Wings responded in the bottom of the eighth with a run of their own, as Centeno drove in Walker to bring the lead to 8-3.

NOTES: The Wings pounded out 13 hits... Adam Brett Walker had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored... James Beresford had two hits, two RBI and one run scored... Buck Britton finished with two hits and one run scored.

1954 - Rochester won by the greatest margin in team history in a 30-2 road victory over Newark. Their effort was led by Fred Merkle, who was 3-for-3 with six runs batted in.

This Day in IL History

1921 - Harry Biemiller records the second no-hitter in the history of the Jersey City Skeeters. Biemiller strikes out five and walks four in the no-hit effort against visiting Buffalo. The Skeeters win the game, 1-0. In the 47 seasons the Jersey City franchise was a member of the International League, only three no-hitters were ever recorded by the club. John Frill was the first, throwing a perfect game in 1912. 24 years after Biemiller's historic outing, Louis Polli recorded the third and final of Jersey City's no-hitters. Biemiller's no-hitter was certainly his personal highlight from 1921, a season in which he lost 20 of 31 decisions.
