Wings fall short in tight game

May 2, 2012

Baseball Month in Rochester presented by Hoselton ToyotaThe Rochester Red Wings lost a close pitcher's duel to the Empire State Yankees 2-1 Wednesday night at Frontier Field. Wings starter Cole DeVries allowed just two runs but received the loss. The series and Baseball Month in Rochester continue Thursday night at 7:05.

Yankees pitching prospect Manny Banuelos returned from the disabled list, where he landed after a rough outing April 12. Banuelos was effective Wednesday, striking out five and allowing two hits over 3 2/3 innings.

Empire State's Steve Pearce hit a second inning home run off DeVries, Pearce's third homer of the season against the Wings.

DeVries worked around trouble in the next four innings, including a second and third with one out situation in the bototmg of the fifth inning. DeVries got help from a nifty play by second baseman Darin Mastroianni to retire Jayson Nix.

The Wings got on the board in the sixth inning. Ben Revere singled with two outs in the inning before quickly making his way around the bases to score on Brian Dozier's double.

DeVries pitched another beauty, but once again was denied the win. He came out in the bottom of the seventh, with a runner on first and one out, and the score still tied at 1-1. Deolis Guerra came on in relief and struk out the first batter he faced before giving up an RBI double to Doug Bernier to give the Yankees the 2-1 lead. The run was charged to DeVries, closing the book on his night with two runs allowed, on six hits, no walks, and four strikeout. This was the fourth straight start (of five total) in which DeVries has given up two runs or less and not recieved the win.
