Miracle on Ice Night August 1

Wings, Chiefs will wear 1980-themed USA Hockey jerseys
June 16, 2015

updated 7/31/15

The Rochester Red Wings have announced plans for the Miracle on Ice Night presented by Airport Transmission, Castle, the Democrat & Chronicle, Jeremiah's Tavern and Labatt on Saturday, August 1 when the Wings host the Syracuse Chiefs at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m.

Both teams will be wearing jerseys from the 1980 Olympics. Rochester will be in white while Syracuse will wear blue. The umpires will also be in referee jerseys.

Both teams' jerseys will be auctioned off in the ballpark August 1 to benefit the Red Wings Community Foundation and will be signed by the members of the 1980 US Men's Ice Hockey team that will be in attendance - Mike Ramsey, John Harrington and Ken Morrow. Each jersey for the in-ballpark auction will be signed by all three Olympians, but not the Red Wings player who wore the jersey on the field as has been the usual protocol for jersey auctions in the past. The auction will begin when the gates open at 6 p.m. A "buy it now" price will be listed with each jersey when the in-ballpark auction begins at 6 p.m.

In addition, one blue and one white USA jersey is currently available for auction on our official online auction site until August 10, so bidders from around the country and around the world can have the opportunity to own this commemorative item. Click here to bid on the two USA jerseys, on our official auction site.

Ramsey, Harrington and Morrow will also have two autograph sessions from 6-6:45 p.m. and 7:05-8 p.m. Between sessions, they will shoot the first pitch with a hockey stick rather than throw it.

Highlights of the 1980 hockey team's improbable victory over the Soviet Union will be shown during inning breaks and on-field promotions will have a hockey theme to them.

Fans planning on attending should prepare to leave with more than they came with. The first 1,500 fans will receive a "Relive the Miracle" puck, the first 5,000 fans will receive a reprint of the Demoract & Chronicle front page from the day after the US beat the USSR, and mini American Flags will be given away to the first 5,000 people through the gates.

"Relive the Miracle" t-shirts will also be available for $15. The shirts have the official event logo on the front, and the names of the 1980 Team USA members on the back.

Empty stomachs will be needed to score a Hat Trick - a one-night only food special - at the Black Angus concession stand. Consisting of a 1/2 pound cheeseburger, a 1/4 pound hot dog and a 1/3 pound Italian sausage with peppers and onions on a DiPaolo sub roll, the Hat Trick will be available for $10.

A postgame interview with all three Olympians, co-hosted by FoxSports 1280's Dan Moriarty, will precede a fireworks show set to music from 1980. Red Wings players will also select special walk-up songs, and music played between innings will all come from 1980. Fans are also encouraged to bring their own American Flags and dress in red, white and blue clothing.

Mike Ramsey had one of the most successful NHL careers of the members of the 1980 squad. Immediately following the Olympics, he signed with Buffalo and played 14 of his 18 NHL seasons with the Sabres while playing in four All-Star Games, all with Buffalo. He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001 and spent 2000-10 as assistant coach for the expansion Minnesota Wild.

John Harrington, a member of the "Conehead Line," recorded an assist on Mike Eruzione's game-winning goal against the USSR and played for the Rochester Americans after signing with the Buffalo Sabres after the Olympics. He would go into coaching following his playing career, spending 1993-2008 as men's ice hockey head coach at Saint John's University, a Division 3 institution in Minnesota.

Ken Morrow was a star defenseman for Bowling Green, joined the New York Islanders after the Olympics, and became the first player to win a gold medal and the Stanley Cup in the same year - one of four Cup-winning Islanders teams he played for. He is a member of the US Hockey Hall of Fame and New York Islanders Hall of Fame.
