RockHounds Fall In Extra Innings
Saturday, San Antonio erased an early 3-0 deficit and defeated the RockHounds, 4-3. Sunday afternoon, it was the 'Hounds who trailed early (by the same 3-0 score) before rallying back, but could gain no more than a 3-3 tie. The Missions then "Frankensteined" a run together in the 11th inning to claim their second consecutive 4-3 win in the series.
Missions starter Burch Smith was outstanding, tossing 5.0 shutout innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out seven. Despite lowering his ERA to 1.38 (fourth-best in the Texas League), the Texas native (and former Howard College star) took a no decision.
The Missions built a 3-0 lead, scoring in each of the first three innings, with a ground out, single and sacrifice fly plating the runs.
The 'Hounds drew to within 3-2 when Darwin Perez singled leading off the seventh and David Freitas followed with his first home run of the season, monster shot high on the left field grass berm ("Rocky Mountain").
After Jefry Marte was hit by a pitch leading off the eighth, singles by Jake Goebbert and Dusty Coleman (RBI) tied the game.
Singles by Jeudy Valdez and Eddie Rodriguez set the table in the Missions' 11th inning, with Raymond Fuentes driving in the game-winner on a sacrifice fly.
Kevin Quackenbush earned his second save in as many games (his third overall), lowering his ERA to 0.84.
Kibbles & Bits
- Jake Goebbert went 2-for-5 to extend the Texas League's longest hit streak in 2013 to 14 games. Jake is 19-for-53 (.358) in the 14-gamer, with six doubles, three home runs, eight RBI and 11 runs scored.
- Anthony Aliotti also went 2-for-5 (both hits were doubles), and now leads the Texas League with a .348 average.
- Jefry Marte, who opened the season hitting .344 in his first nine games after falling into a deep slump, has busted loose of late. The 21-year-old third baseman is 6-for-11 in his last three games, with three doubles, four runs scored, and a stolen base.
- Dusty Coleman has hit in five straight games, going 8-for-22 (.364) with six RBI.
- Frisco rallied to beat San Antonio (also by a 4-3 score), which means the four teams in the South Division are now separated by just one game. The 'Hounds and Hooks are both 13-10 … the Missions and Roughriders both 12-11.
- The RockHounds host San Antonio Monday 6:30 before hitting the road for a four-game series at Corpus Christi (Tuesday through Friday).
