SALEM, Va. – The Delmarva Shorebirds lead the Carolina League North.

The Salem Red Sox (38-42, 8-10) entered the ballpark leading a suspended game 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth that was rained out on Saturday night.

However, the day belonged to the Delmarva Shorebirds (38-44, 10-8) as it didn’t take long to get on the scoreboard hammering Matt Litwicki (L, 0-1) to take the lead and never looked back taking down the Red Sox 6-4 in the doubleheader’s opener.

Delmarva used two arms in the resumption, Edgar Portes (W, 5-2) dealt five innings allowing just a single run before Brayan Sánchez (SV, 1) slammed the door in the ninth.

Game two of the modified doubleheader was set for just seven innings and again Delmarva jumped early to take the eventual game-winning lead.

The top of the first saw Stiven Acevedo double, advancing to third on an error before the next batter Carter Young brought him in on an RBI groundout.

Salem responded in the home half of the inning as Lyonell James grounded out to bring in Jhostynxon Garcia from third to tie it up.

The Shorebirds quickly earned the lead back in the second when Erison Placencia grounded into a bases-loaded double play to score the eventual game-winning run as Delmarva took it, 2-1.

Noah Dean (L, 1-6) took the loss, his fifth such decision in six games. Meanwhile, Deivy Cruz (W, 7-1) dominated out of the pen for the Shorebirds dealing four of the seven frames only allowing two hits.

The Shorebirds now sit atop the Carolina League North, a full game ahead of the next closest team, the Wood Ducks.

Delmarva took the series two games to one and will now return home to take on the Charleston RiverDogs. Salem will hit the road for a six-game series with the Down East Wood Ducks in Kinston, North Carolina.
