SAN ANTONIO — The San Diego Padres have announced the break camp roster for the 2025 San Antonio Missions. The initial 28-man roster takes the field at Nelson Wolff Stadium tonight at 7:05 p.m to begin a three-game exhibition series against the Acereros de Monclova of the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol.
“[We have] a real good mix of players on this club,” said Missions manager Luke Montz. “A real good mix of dudes.”
Ethan Salas, the 18-year-old catcher who is the No. 33 prospect in all of Minor League Baseball according to MLB Pipeline, highlights the exciting Missions roster. Salas was initially called up to San Antonio in 2023 before spending the entire 2024 season in High-A Fort Wayne. The second-ranked prospect in the Padres system is coming off an extended stint with the big-league club at Spring Training as he kicks off the year in San Antonio.
“I’m happy to be here in San Antonio, really happy to be back,” said Salas upon arriving with the Missions. “I’m looking forward to the season. We’ve got a really good group of guys.”
Salas caught the 2025 Spring Breakout game for the Padres, and his battery mate on the mound, Braden Nett, is also on the Missions to begin the upcoming season. Nett has quickly climbed the system after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2022 out of St. Charles Community College. MLB Pipeline ranks him as the ninth-best Padres prospect. Like Salas, Nett spent time on the major league team in Spring Training.
In total, eight of MLB Pipeline’s top 30 Padres prospects will play at The Wolff this season. This includes the Padres’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2024, Henry Bàez, who returns to San Antonio after earning a call-up to Double-A midway through 2024. Bàez was part of a combined no-hitter last season and dazzled with a 2.79 ERA in 26 games.
There’s also no shortage of star-power on this year’s Missions squad. Wyatt Hoffman, son of MLB Hall of Fame closer Trevor Hoffman, will begin the 2025 campaign in the Alamo City. He’s joined by Kai Murphy, whose dad Pat Murphy is the manager for the Milwaukee Brewers.
