SAN ANTONIO, April 8, 2025 — Thanks to a blistering start to the season, Missions infielder Devin Ortiz earned the first Texas League Player of the Week award of the 2025 season for the week of March 31 - April 6. In three games, Ortiz went 5-9 (.556) with a home run, three RBIs and a walk as the Missions won their season-opening series against the Amarillo Sod Poodles.
For Ortiz, this is the first weekly award of his career. All the more impressive is that these were the first three games at the Double-A level for the 26-year-old from Nutley, N.J. Ortiz spent the entire 2024 season with High-A Fort Wayne, where he hit .245 with six home runs and 50 RBI.
The San Diego Padres signed Ortiz as an undrafted free agent out of The University of Virginia in 2022. As a Cavalier, Ortiz was one of five finalists for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award. He hit .269 with 18 home runs and 103 RBIs across five seasons in Charlottesville. In that same timeframe, Ortiz went 10-1 with a 2.52 ERA as a pitcher.
Ortiz and the Missions now hit the road for the first time as they begin a six-game series in Corpus Christi. The Hooks and Missions will battle starting tonight at 6:35 p.m, with all the action available on Country Legends KKYX, 680 AM, 104.9 FM and KKYX.com.
One week from today on April 15, the Missions return to Wolff Stadium for a six-game homestand against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. For more information, call 210-675-7275 or visit samissions.com.
