Missions Suffer Tough 7-6 Loss to Amarillo

AMARILLO (AUGUST 2, 2026) — After an 11-inning win on Saturday, the San Antonio Missions couldn't replicate the same extra-inning success on Sunday. The Amarillo Sod Poodles earned a 7-6 victory in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Hodgetown.

San Antonio has dropped nine one-run games to the Sod Poodles this season. They have a 1-9 record in those situations against Amarillo, and are 18-6 against all other opponents.

Both teams traded runs in the first inning. Braedon Karpathios and Jake Cunningham launched back-to-back solo home runs to left, putting the Missions in front 2-0. Amarillo tied the game on a Ben McLaughlin RBI double and Druw Jones sacrifice fly.

Jones provided another sacrifice fly in the third, giving the Sod Poddles a 3-2 lead.

Luis Verdugo responded with a sacrifice fly of his own, evening the game at 3.

Amarillo took control of the game in the fifth, scoring three runs on one play. After Jones and Alberto Barriga reached, Junior Franco lined an RBI double down the right-field line. A relay throw to third base ended up in the dugout, allowing both Barriga and Franco to come home and make it 6-3 Amarillo.

However, the Missions punched back in the seventh to make it a one-run game. Brendan Durfee’s sacrifice fly scored Verdugo. Tirso Ornelas singled home Wyatt Hoffman to reduce the deficit to 6-5.

San Antonio was on the verge of defeat in the ninth, but impressively rallied to tie the game. Durfee reached for an infield single, and Kai Roberts pinch ran for him. Down to their final strike in the game, Carson Tucker singled to move Roberts to third. Ornelas then came up and also faced a two-strike count, before singling to right and tying the contest.

Igor Gil’s 1-2-3 frame in the bottom of the ninth sent the game to extra innings.

The Missions were unable to score in the top of the 10th, and the Sod Poodles took advantage. Jones drove in Angel Ortiz as the winning run with a walk-off RBI single, as the Missions suffered a crushing loss.
