San Antonio’s Domingo Leyba Named Texas League Player of the Week 

Batted .458 with 2 Homers and 6 RBI Against Amarillo

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Missions infielder Domingo Leyba has been named Texas League Player of the Week for the week of June 13-19, announced by Major League Baseball today. Leyba becomes the second Missions player to be recognized with an award this season. This is the first mid-season award for Leyba in his professional career.

Appearing in all six games last week against Amarillo, Leyba batted .458 (11-for-24) while slugging two home runs and three doubles. He drove in six runs while scoring six runs of his own. Leyba also showed off his baserunning skills by swiping two bases against the Sod Poodles.

On Saturday, June 18th, the switch-hitting infielder went 4-for-5 with a home run and four runs driven in while scoring twice. He joins Connor Hollis (May 2-8) as the only other Missions player to be named Texas League Player of the Week in 2022.

Following his performance against Amarillo, he is now batting .273 in 41 games for the Missions this season. He has five home runs, six doubles, and 29 runs batted in. Leyba has also scored 23 runs and drawn 25 walks during his time with San Antonio. Leyba began the season in Triple-A El Paso and appeared in 10 games before being transferred to San Antonio.

For Leyba, he has previously won two post-season awards. In 2013, he was named a Dominican Summer League Post-Season All-Star while playing for the DSL Tigers. In 2018, he was named the Most Valuable Player of the Southern League Championship Series while playing for the Jackson Generals.

The San Diego Padres signed Leyba to a minor league contract on December 14th, 2021 after spending time with three different organizations last season.

Leyba and the Missions return to action on Tuesday, June 21st to begin a six-game road trip against the Wichita Wind Surge.
