MOOSIC, Pa. (July 19th, 2023) — The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders took the win over the Worcester Red Sox by a score of 5-3. Jamie Westbrook and Andrés Chaparro homered and every member of the RailRiders starting lineup reached base. Jhony Brito fanned a season-high eight in the win.

In the bottom of the first, major league rehabber Greg Allen lined a single. Allen advanced to third on an Everson Pereira base hit. Chaparro singled him in shortly thereafter to make it a 1-0 advantage for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Jamie Westbrook led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run. Westbrook’s 13th long ball of the season expanded the RailRiders lead to 2-0.

The runs continued to flow in the bottom of the third when Andres Chaparro crushed a solo shot 441 feet for his 18th home run of the season. At the end of three, SWB held a 3-0 lead.

The scoring continued in the fourth when Michael Hermosillo led off the bottom half of the inning with a double. Hermosillo advanced on a groundout and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly making it a 4-0 lead for the RailRiders.

Wilyer Abreu began the fifth with a homer for Worcester to break up the shutout and make it 4-1, still in favor of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The RailRiders gained some insurance in the bottom of the eighth. Jesús Bastidas singled and stole second. Wilmer Difo worked a walk and Carlos Narvaez brought Bastidas home on a single to push the RailRiders to a 5-1 lead.

Worcester tried to rally in the top of the ninth, tallying two on a single from Nick Sogard and a two-run home run from Ceddanne Rafaela. The RailRiders staved off the Red Sox from there to keep the score at 5-3.

Jhony Brito (W, 2-1) put forth a strong start going six innings allowing just a run on two hits with eight strikeouts. Matt Krook tallied 1.2 scoreless innings of work with three strikeouts. Aaron McGarity allowed two runs in 0.2 innings and Zach Greene (S, 1) got the save in a scoreless 0.2 innings.

Brian Van Belle (L, 1-1) tossed five frames allowing four runs on eight hits. Rio Gomez and Theo Denlinger each pitched a scoreless inning. Justin Garza gave up a run in an inning of work.
