Burrows Masterful As Saints Hang On For 3-2 Victory Over Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (September 15, 2021) - Only one time in 24 Triple-A starts did Beau Burrows pitch into the seventh inning. He matched his Triple-A career high on Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field by hurling 6.1 innings against the Indianapolis Indians. The offense did just enough as the St. Paul Saints hung on at the end for a 3-2 victory.

Damek Tomscha picked up where he left off from Tuesday night by leading off the second with a double into the right field corner. Sherman Johnson drove him home with an RBI single to right-center putting the Saints up 1-0.

After retiring the side in order in the first, Burrows gave up his lone run n the bottom of the second inning. The Indians tied it as Hunter Owen doubled with one out. John Nokgowski followed with an RBI single to left-center making it 1-1.

The Saints regained the lead in the third as Jose Miranda singled to center with one out. With two outs Mark Contreras singled and that was followed by an RBI single to right-center by Jimmy Kerrigan giving the Saints a 2-1 lead.

Tomscha continued his hot hitting in the fourth as he led off with a double to left-center. He finished the day 2-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Tomscha moved to third on a fly out by Johnson and scored on Caleb Hamilton’s single off the glove of a drawn in shortstop, Ethan Paul.

Burrows put it on cruise control after the second allowing just a leadoff single to Bligh Madris in the fourth, leaving him stranded at second, a two-out single to Tucupita Marcano in the fifth, and then walking his final hitter, Chris Sharpe, with one out in the seventh. Nick Vincent finished off the seventh by fanning Taylor Davis and Ethan Paul. Burrows went 6.1 innings, his longest outing since April 11, 2019 when he was with Toledo, the only other time he’s pitched into the seventh at Triple-A, allowing one run on four hits while walking two and striking out six. It was tied for the seventh longest start of his career.

The Saints had to hang on in the ninth, however, as Yennier Cano tried to close it out. Madris led off the inning with a double to right-center. With one out John Nogowski walked. With two outs David drove home Madris with a single to right cutting the Saints lead to one. Paul then walked to load the bases, but Cano was able to get Marcano to ground out to second to end the game.

The same two teams meet in game three of the six-game series on Thursday night at 6:05 p.m. central. The Saints send RHP Derek Law (1-0, 3.20) to the mound against Indians RHP James Marvel (5-6, 5.24). The game can be heard on KFAN plus, 96.7 FM.
