Rochester, NY (July 7, 2017) - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the opening game of a three-game series to the Rochester Red Wings, 9-3, Friday night at Frontier Field. Rochester scored eight runs in the third inning on eight hits on the way to the win. Syracuse's bullpen was excellent though, retiring 15 Red Wings in a row at one point between the third and eighth innings. Emmanuel Burriss drove in all three of the Chiefs' runs in the game.
Rochester (47-39) started the scoring against A.J. Cole in the first inning. Niko Goodrum led off the game with a single. Two batters later, Tommy Field singled and then Matt Hague's single drove in Goodrum for a 1-0 Red Wings lead.
Syracuse (32-53) took the lead momentarily thanks to a two-run second. After Red Wings' starter David Hurlbut retired the first two batters of the inning, Jhonatan Solano singled, Caleb Ramsey doubled, and Burriss singled to drive in both runs and give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead.
The Red Wings broke the game open in the third though, sending 11 batters to the plate with eight reaching on five singles, a double and two home runs. Mitch Garver and Field each singled and then after a fly out, ByungHo Park doubled down the left-field line, bringing in both runners and giving Rochester the lead back at 3-2. From there after a groundout, Ryan Strausborger singled in Park, Bengie Gonzalez singled, and Engelb Vielma singled in Strausborger, pushing the score to 5-2. Goodrum followed with a three-run home run off Cole to break the game open at 8-2. Cody Satterwhite came out of the bullpen and surrendered a home run to Garver to extend the lead to 9-2.
Satterwhite would retire the next ten batters he faced, as part of the stretch where the Chiefs bullpen retired 15 batters in a row.
The Chiefs added another run in the ninth against John Curtiss. Solano doubled to open the inning, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on Burriss' single to left to make the score 9-3.
The Chiefs and Red Wings play the second game of the three-game series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Erick Fedde is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite Aaron Slegers for Rochester.
