Isan Diaz reached base four times and drove in the only run of the game as Zac Gallen pitched six scoreless innings in the New Orleans Baby Cakes' 1-0 shutout of the Iowa Cubs on Saturday night.
Diaz drew a pair of walks and singled, but it was his sixth-inning double which proved to be the decisive hit. After Austin Nola led off the frame with a double and was sacrificed to third, Diaz stroked his second two-bagger in as many games to give New Orleans the lead.
Gallen (6-5) continued his strong pitching since the All-Star break by limiting the I-Cubs to four hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out four and walked three and has allowed one run in 12 innings over his last two starts.
Joe Gunkel chipped in two innings of relief, and Jumbo Diaz worked around a pair of hits in the ninth to record his eighth save.
Trevor Clifton (1-2) ended up with the loss after scattering four hits and four walks through 5 2/3 innings. He allowed the single earned run while fanning three.
The Baby Cakes and Cubs play the rubber match of the three-game set on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
