Adams, Engel lead Winston to Sunday sweep
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 19, 2015) - Spencer Adams fired six shutout innings in his High-A debut, and Adam Engel had two hits and two stolen bases to lead the Winston-Salem Dash past Lynchburg 3-0 to complete a sweep of a de facto doubleheader on Sunday at BB&T Ballpark.
Making a spot start for Winston-Salem (14-9, 44-49), Adams (1-0) scattered only three hits, walked one and punched out four to earn the win in his High-A debut.
Engel singled with one out in the third and advanced to third on a stolen base and a throwing error. Two batters later, Lynchburg (10-14, 43-51) starter Perci Garner (0-1) issued a wild pitch on ball four to Trey Michalczewski, with Engel racing in from third to score the game's first run.
An inning later, Nick Basto, who had two hits to extend his hitting streak to five games, singled to begin the frame. A wild pitch sent him to second, and Nolan Earley ripped an RBI double down the left field line to put Winston-Salem up 2-0.
The Dash extended their lead in the fifth, with Engel notching a double and a swipe of third base. Two batters after that, a Michalczewski sacrifice fly made it 3-0 Winston-Salem. Even though his season-long 11-game hit streak came to an end, Michalczewski notched an RBI for the eighth time in his last nine games.
Brad Goldberg struck out the side in the seventh inning for his second save of the season.
All but one Dash batter reached at least once, with Jeremy Dowdy posting a 2-for-3 effort in the victory.
Winston-Salem sends Matt Heidenreich (10-2, 2.46 ERA) to the mound Monday against Lynchburg's Dace Kime (2-4, 4.13 ERA). Pregame radio coverage is available at 6:45 p.m., with the first pitch at 7 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.
