Mathis Masters Clippers

Doug Mathis enjoyed his best outing of the season on Friday night, leading the PawSox to a 5-1 win over Columbus. The right hander worked 6 innings, scattering 5 hits and striking out 2. Mathis (2-2) didn't walk anyone. Junichi Tazawa turned in another strong effort, pitching a scoreless seventh, retiring the Clippers in order. Tony Pena pitched the eighth and ninth innings. Pena struck out 4, allowing a run on 2 hits.

Mauro Gomez belted a two run double for the second straight ballgame. Gomez has a team high 33 RBI. Lars Anderson and Ryan Lavarnway had an RBI each and Jose Iglesias and Pedro Ciriaco had two hits apiece.

The first place PawSox (23-13) will face the Clippers again on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Daisuke Matsuzaka will make his second rehab start for Pawtucket.
