Sox sign Scott Schoeneweis to deal

The Boston Red Sox today agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Scott Schoeneweis on a 2010 minor league contract and invited him to Major League Spring Training as a non-roster player. Schoeneweis is scheduled to report to camp tomorrow.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Schoeneweis, 36, appeared in seven Cactus League games as a non-roster invitee with Milwaukee this spring before being released by the Brewers on March 25. He spent the 2009 season with the Arizona Diamondbacks, going 1-2 with six holds and a 7.13 ERA (19 ER/24.0 IP).

Originally signed by the Angels as a third-round selection in the 1996 First-Year Player Draft, Schoeneweis has appeared in 562 career Major League games (93 starts) over parts of 11 seasons with the Angels (1999-2003), White Sox (2003-04), Blue Jays (2005-06), Reds (2006), Mets (2007-08) and Diamondbacks (2009). He has posted a 46-57 record with nine saves, a 4.97 ERA (529 ER/958.1 IP) and 555 strikeouts, and has held left-handed hitters to a .227 average (272-for-1,200). Schoeneweis won a World Series with the Angels in 2002, appearing in six games that postseason and tallying a 3.00 ERA (1 ER/3.0 IP).

With the addition of Schoeneweis, the Red Sox now have 39 players in Big League camp, including seven non-roster invitees.
