Aces use long ball to earn series split

Ransom & O'Brien homer in 6-2 win
April 21, 2015

RENO - The Reno Aces (@Aces) used home runs from Cody Ransom (@ransom_cody) and Peter O'Brien, and a strong performance from starter Robbie Ray (@RobbieRay) to top the Albuquerque Isotopes, 6-2, Monday night at Aces Ballpark.

Reno dropped the first two games of the series but bounced back with a walk-off win on Sunday and a win in the finale to earn a series split to even their record to 6-6.

The 'Topes (7-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Ben Paulsen doubled off the left-center wall.

The lead didn't last for Albuquerque as the Aces came back with four runs in the home half of the opening inning. Sunday's hero, Mike Freeman (@MikeBFree5) led off the frame with a double to left-field. Two batters later, Jamie Romak walked, then Peter O'Brien doubled to drive in Freeman and even the game at 1-1.

Zach Borenstein bounced out to the pitcher for the second out of the inning, bringing up Ransom who belted a 0-2 pitch over the left-field wall for a three-run home run.

The Aces added a run in the second on Romak's RBI single to drive the lead up to 5-1.

Ray settled in nicely after allowing the run in the first. He got out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the third. He then struck out the side in order in the fourth inning and struck out the side again in the fifth. Ray racked up ten strikeouts, marking the 20th time in Aces history a pitcher has recorded 10+ strikeouts.

From there the bullpen took over and kept Albuquerque at distance. Matt Reynolds tossed a scoreless sixth, Derek Eitel (@Deitel10) threw two frames and Willy Paredes struck out the side in the ninth to close out the win.

O'Brien's blast was a solo shot in the seventh inning, his fourth long ball of the season. He finished the night 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs scored.

Reno welcomes their in-state rival, the Las Vegas 51s to Aces Ballpark for a four-game series set to begin Tuesday. Left-hander Justin Marks (1-1, 8.68) starts for the Aces against left-hander Darin Gorski (2-0, 1.80) for the 51s. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
