United Soccer League awards franchise to Reno

First game will be played at Aces Ballpark in 2017
September 16, 2015

RENO - The United Soccer League announced today that Reno will be the site of the league's 28th franchise with play set to begin in 2017. In a ceremony at Aces Ballpark this afternoon, USL President Jake Edwards awarded the franchise to Reno Aces owner Herb Simon.

The USL is currently a 24-team professional soccer league as part of the US Soccer Federation. The league includes teams such as the Sacramento Republic FC, Portland Timbers 2, Seattle Sounders 2, LA Galaxy II, Arizona United and New York Red Bulls II, among others.

The USL regular season schedule spans from March-September with playoff games into October. The Reno franchise will play its 15 home games at Aces Ballpark.

"Aces Ballpark was always envisioned as a venue to bring the community together," Reno Aces team president Eric Edelstein said. "Bringing USL professional soccer to Reno is the next step in bringing world-class sports and entertainment to Reno."

Edelstein will occupy the same role for the USL Club as he does for the Reno Aces Baseball Club. Chris Gelfuso will serve as Chief Financial Officer, and Andrew Daugherty is the Executive Vice President.

A team name for Reno's USL franchise will be decided by the fans in a "Name the Team" contest. Fans are encouraged to visit www.uslreno2017.com to submit a team name and have a chance to win season tickets. The team logo, colors, and coaching staff will be announced at a later date.

Season ticket deposits of $25 can be made now at www.uslreno2017.com with plans ranging from seven to 15 games. Group tickets will be available in fall of 2016, and single-game tickets will be available in 2017.

"The USL is thrilled to welcome Reno, Nevada as its 28th franchise," USL CEO Alec Papadakis said. "The vibrant city of Reno, combined with the outstanding ownership of Herb Simon, will assuredly create a most professional soccer organization. One of the world's largest and most successful commercial mall developers, as well as the owner of the NBA's Indiana Pacers and Minor League Baseball's Reno Aces, Mr. Simon will bring his vast business experience and passion for sports to the USL. We look forward to working with him and his president, Eric Edelstein, to bring exciting professional soccer to Reno.

The USL is a vital piece of the growth and development of soccer in North America, on and off the field. With 24 clubs in the 2015 season, the USL looks to expand strategically with strong ownership groups that share the league's passion and vision, in markets that are positioned for long-term success. The USL recently announced the additions of Lehigh Valley, FC Cincinnati and Rio Grande Valley FC for the 2016 season.
