WP: Sam Hentges (1-4) LP: Tom Eshelman (0-3) Save: None
Summary
Akron starting pitcher Sam Hentges threw six scoreless innings to pick up his first Double-A win and the RubberDucks' offense got untracked led by Wilson Garcia's four hits, in a 7-0 win over the Reading Fightin' Phils on Friday night at Canal Park.
Turning Point
Akron broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the third inning, coming on RBI singles from Alexis Pantoja and Garcia. Akron added another run in the fifth inning on a Connor Marabell fielder's choice and finished the scoring with a four-run eighth inning.
Mound Presence
Hentges had his best outing of the season, going six innings and allowing two hits, walking five and striking out seven. He had allowed at least three runs in his five prior starts and lowered his season ERA from 8.02 to 6.26. The hits were a season low and the seven strikeouts a season high. He was relieved by Kyle Nelson , who joined the RubberDucks from High-A Lynchburg today. Nelson threw two scoreless innings with a strikeout. Luke Eubank , who was promoted to Akron from Mahoning Valley, threw a scoreless ninth inning.
Duck Tales
The RubberDucks managed nine hits on the night, all singles. Garcia's four led the way and Pantoja added two of his own. Seven different Ducks had RBI in the game and all seven runs were scored by different players.
Notebook
It was Garcia's fourth multi-hit game of the season and his first four-hit game. It was the second for the team (Pantoja 4/13-2@ALT)…For Pantoja, he now leads the team with eight multi-hit games in 2019…In the bottom of the fifth inning, Akron outfielder Daniel Johnson and manager Rouglas Odor were ejected by home plate umpire Sean Shafer-Markle for arguing balls and strikes. It is the first ejection for both this season…The 7-0 win was Akron's largest margin of victory at Canal Park this season and largest home shutout…Transactions: RHP James Karinchak promoted to Columbus from Akron; LHP Kyle Nelson promoted to Akron from Lynchburg; LHP David Speer sent to Mahoning Valley from Akron; RHP Luke Eubank promoted to Akron from Mahoning Valley…This marked Akron's fifth shutout of the season, tied for the EL lead with Altoona…Tonight snapped a five-game Canal Park losing streak vs. Reading. Akron's last win vs. REA at home was 6/2/17…Time of Game: 2:50…Attendance: 4,604
On the Pond
The RubberDucks will continue the four-game series on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. RHP Matt Solter (1-0, 2.57) is scheduled for Akron and RHP Ramon Rosso (2-0, 0.89) is scheduled for Reading. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM, the WARF iHeart channel, and the TuneIn Radio App.
