Summary

Three Akron pitchers combined to strikeout nine, but a leadoff home run was enough to power the Bowie Baysox to a 1-0 win over the Akron RubberDucks on Saturday night at Prince George’s Stadium.

Turning Point

For the second night in a row, Billy Cook wasted little time giving Bowie the lead. The Baysox outfielder lined the first pitch of the bottom of the first over the wall in left to put Bowie ahead 1-0.

Mound Presence

Doug Nikhazy settled in after the leadoff home run. The left-hander allowed a single to the next Baysox batter, Jackson Holliday, but then did not allow a hit the rest of the way, tossing four innings allowing the one run while striking out three. Jordan Jones followed with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts. Davis Sharpe struck out three over two scoreless innings as well.

Duck Tales

Akron was held hitless until the top of the sixth inning when Jose Tena lined a two-out single. After Tena advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt, Angel Martinez kept the threat alive by working a two-out walk. However, a lineout would end Akron’s scoring chance in the sixth.

Notebook

Tena reached on three of his four plate appearances…Martinez’s walk in the sixth extended his on-base streak to 13 games, which ties his longest on-base streak of the season…Game Time: 2:21…Attendance: 5,823.
