Four-Run Inning Lifts Trash Pandas Past Shuckers, 5-3

MADISON, AL – The Rocket City Trash Pandas used a four-run fifth inning to defeat the Biloxi Shuckers, 5-3, in game three of a six-game series at Toyota Field on Thursday night. The loss for the Shuckers dropped their record to 6-6 on the year, while the Trash Pandas improved to 8-4.
The Shuckers got outstanding pitching from their starter for the second straight game, this time with Christian Mejias. Over 4.1 innings, he allowed one run on two hits while striking out eight.
Rocket City started the scoring in the first when an RBI fielder’s choice from Orlando Martinez to take a 1-0 lead. The Shuckers responded in the second with a two-run home run from Noah Campbell, his first of the year. The two-run blast was the first runs allowed in the season by Trash Pandas starter Coleman Crow, who made his third start.
In the fifth, the Trash Pandas tallied a one-out single off reliever Nick Bennet. Then, a walk and an error led to back-to-back two-run doubles from Tucker Flint and Jeremiah Jackson that gave the Trash Pandas a 5-3 lead.
In relief, Abner Uribe held the Trash Pandas at bay in the eighth with a scoreless inning that saw him touch 102 MPH on the radar gun. The scoreless inning extended his scoreless streak to four innings on the year.
In the ninth, Trash Pandas closer Ben Joyce worked around a leadoff walk to close the door and earn his second save of the year. Crow (2-0) earned the win while Bennett (1-1) took the loss for Biloxi.
Carlos Rodriguez (0-1, 1.00) is set to make his third start of the year for the Shuckers on Friday night against righty Sam Bachman (2-0, 0.84). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Toyota Field.
