Navarro's Controversial Single Lifts Mud Hens Past Bulls, 6-5

Toledo, OH --- Efren Navarro singled home the tying and leading runs on the 13th pitch of his eighth inning at-bat which also netted two ejections as Toledo beat Durham 6-5 at Fifth Third Field on Sunday night.
Moments after Durham (41-27) took its first lead of the game 5-4, Navarro batted with runners at second and third against reliever Adam Kolarek (L, 1-4). The result of Kolarek's 11th pitch was an animated reply by catcher Curt Casali, Kolarek and the entire Bulls dugout, after having appeared to strike out Navarro. The pitch was called a ball, which led to words between Casali and home plate umpire Scott Costello. Seconds later, Casali was ejected, and when Durham manager Jared Sandberg raced out to protect his catcher, the argument persisted, which led to Sandberg's tossing.
When the at-bat continued with new catcher Mike McKenry, Navarro fouled off one additional pitch before hitting a rising liner over the glove of shortstop Alex Sole to score two runs and give a 6-5 lead to Toledo (30-37).
After trailing and rallying all game, the Bulls took their first lead in the eighth thanks to an RBI-single by Mike Marjama and a sacrifice fly by Casey Gillaspie.
After Toledo scored a run in the first against rookie Triple-A starter Hunter Wood, a Gillaspie grounder tied the game 1-1 in the second. The Mud Hens scored twice against Wood in the second, but Shane Peterson clubbed a two-run homer to right to even the game 3-3.
The Mud Hens took their third separate lead of the game with a run in the fourth off of Wood before he was lifted.
Wood lasted 3 1/3 innings in his initial start, allowing six hits, three walks and four earned runs.
Jake Bauers led the Bulls with three hits and a walk, while Gillaspie drove in two runs. Peterson's home run was his team-leading 10th.
The Bulls head home six games up in the South, and open a week long homestand against the Norfolk Tides Monday night at 7:05 PM ET with Brent Honeywell Jr. making the start.
