The Bulls tied the game in the third inning thanks to a solo home run from Tristan Gray. Two innings later, the Bulls scored two more runs to take a 3-1 lead. Manuel Margot, on major league rehab from the Tampa Bay Rays, had an RBI single in the fifth.

Charlotte pulled to within one run of Durham in the seventh inning thanks to a sacrifice-fly RBI from second baseman Marco Hernández. The Bulls charged back in the bottom of the eighth to score two runs on solo home runs from Josh Lowe and Ryan Boldt.

With the Bulls ahead by a score of 5-2, Mahtook launched his team-high 14th home run of the season in the ninth inning. Mahtook, a former Durham slugger, has now recorded three home runs over his last four games.
