Dayton, Ohio—Cade Hunter’s tie-breaking single to left field with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Dayton Dragons a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons won two out of three in the series. A crowd of 7,581 was in attendance at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District.

The game was tied 6-6 entering the bottom of the ninth inning when the Dragons produced a game-winning rally. Sal Stewart led off the inning and nearly won the game immediately, but his long fly ball to left field was caught on the warning track for the first out. Cam Collier then lined a hard single to right field, and Hector Rodriguez doubled past the first baseman into right field to move Collier to third. After Ethan O’Donnell was intentionally walked to load the bases, Hunter lined a hit to left to bring in Collier and end the game.

"I swung over a changeup on the first pitch,” said Hunter. “I figured he was going to come back to it. Was trying to not do too much. I knew we just needed something in play for the most part. I just took that nice, easy approach and something happened."

The Dragons trailed 6-2 as they came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jay Allen II led off the inning with a home run to left field, his first of the year, to make it 6-3. With one out, Stewart singled to center, and Collier followed with a double to right to score Stewart and make it 6-4. Rodriguez then connected on a home run to center field to tie the game at 6-6. It was Rodriguez’s first homer of the year.

After Dayton tied the game, Dragons reliever Brody Jessee provided two strong innings of work. He struck out five over two scoreless innings and never allowed a runner past first base to earn the win.

The Dragons won the series despite being shutout in the opener on Friday.

"Especially after falling in the first game, it was really good to come out here and do our thing because we know we're good. I'm happy we're walking out of here 2-1,” said Hunter.

The Dragons finished with 14 hits. Stewart, Collier, and Rodriguez, hitting third, fourth, and fifth in the lineup, each had three hits. The Dragons were 4 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

Notes: Cincinnati Reds reliever Ian Gibaut tossed a perfect fifth inning on a major league injury rehab assignment. He struck out one while throwing just 10 pitches in the inning. It was Gibaut’s second rehab appearance with the Dragons.

Up Next: The Dragons (2-1) do not play on Monday. They will open a six-game series in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Tuesday, April 9 against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at 7:35 pm (EDT).
