The Dayton community is a great place to live, work and play. But what makes Dayton truly great are the people that call Dayton home. We have great people and great organizations in our community that do incredible things each and every day. Throughout the season, the Dragons and Vectren will honor five "All-Stars" with a special inning break tribute in recognition of their service.
Safe Harbor House: Helping Women Get Back on Their Feet
When someone's life is shattered due to trauma or various types of abuse it can be tough to rebuild. While correctional facilities have programs in place to help women once they return to society, sometimes it isn't enough. When Joy Fagan started working as a chaplain at the Clark County Jail, she noticed that most women incarcerated for drugs or solicitation were also trauma victims and were being arrested rather than helped back on their feet.
In 2012, the Safe Harbor House (SHH) officially opened and admitted their first residents into the program. SHH is not an average 30 or 90-day rehab program. Instead, it can last 12-18 months for residents to learn how to rebuild their lives. The goal for the SHH is to provide a safe home without an institutional feel and for women to find a therapeutic community in which they can heal.
Then begins the healing process in which residents learn about six areas of growth: physical, emotional, spiritual, relational, life skills and education/employment. With SHH, rehabilitation is through hands-on experiences to give the residents a feel for the growth, rather than just reading about it from a book.
Now in the seventh year of operation, SHH helps about 30 women per year, and around 250 women since its creation. After each phase of the healing process is complete, the women participate in a "phase-up" ceremony, celebrating the growth they have made since first stepping foot in SHH.
The staff at the SHH shows us that everyone can do something to help, no matter how small. Every day they see women who have faced hardships and the SHH is a reminder that we have all had tough experiences in life but now is a chance to give back to those in need.
For making a difference in the community, Safe Harbor House has been selected as a Dragons Community All Star. The program honors those that have gone above and beyond to improve the quality of life in the Miami Valley.
