Eastlake, Ohio-Jarrod Sabourin collected three hits including a run-scoring double to lead the Lake County Captains to a 4-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Sunday afternoon. The Captains have won the first two games the series. Dayton fell to 13-22 in the second half with the loss.
The Dragons broke a 1-1 tie to take the lead in the third inning when Spencer Dickinson walked and scored on Yorman Rodriguez's two-out double. But Lake County took the lead with two runs in the sixth inning, getting a game-tying RBI single from Jake Lowery and the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice play to make it 3-2. They added one more in the seventh on Sabourin's RBI double to make it 4-2.
In the Dayton half of the eighth, Dickinson walked to start the inning and Rodriguez singled to left, moving Dickinson to second. Sean Buckley followed with a hard line drive up the middle. Lake County pitcher Manny Carmona reached for the ball and held it in his glove momentarily, but then dropped it as he gained his balance. With the lead runner Dickinson between second and third, Carmona picked the ball up and threw to third. Captains third baseman Leonardo Castillo then threw the ball to second. Umpires ruled that Carmona initially controlled the ball and ruled a catch, retiring Buckley. Castillo's throw to second doubled off Dickinson for the second out of the inning, leaving Rodriguez at first after a play that was confusing to the defense and the base runners.
Ryan Wright then doubled down the left field line, scoring Rodriguez to make it 4-3. Kyle Waldrop reached on an error as Wright went to third, but Junior Arias struck out to end the threat.
In the ninth, Dayton's Juan Perez singled with two outs, but Dickinson stuck out on an attempted check swing to end the game.
Dragons starting pitcher Stalin Gerson pitched well but was not involved in the decision. He worked five innings, allowing five hits and one run with no walks and five strikeouts. Ryan Kemp (1-4) replaced Gerson to start the sixth and was charged with the loss. He tossed two innings and allowed four hits and three runs while walking one and striking out one. Mike Dennhardt pitched the final inning for the Dragons and retired the side in order with one strikeout.
The Dragons finished with seven hits. Rodriguez had two hits and two RBI and Wright added two hits and one run batted in. Dickinson walked three times and scored two runs.
The Dragons battle the Captains in the last game of the three-game series on Monday at 7:00 p.m. (WONE 980 AM). Jacob Johnson (1-3, 5.37) will start for Dayton against Lake County's Mason Radeke (5-5, 3.81). The Dragons begin a four-game home series against Lansing at Fifth Third Field in Dayton on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. James Allen is Tuesday's scheduled starter for Dayton, while Robert Stephenson is scheduled to pitch Wednesday with Wes Mugarian throwing Thursday and Gerson on Friday.
Notes: Dennhardt, who has not allowed a run in the month of July, extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 14, the longest of the year for a Dayton pitcher...Gerson's outing marked the second straight start for him in which he has allowed one solo homer as his only run surrendered.
