Dayton, Ohio—The Quad Cities River Bandits broke open a one-run game with four runs in the sixth inning and went on to defeat the Dayton Dragons 12-3 on Sunday afternoon. The Bandits won five of six games in the series.

A crowd of 7,843 was in attendance at Day Air Ballpark.

Recap: After Quad Cities took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, the Dragons rallied to take the lead in the third. Esmith Pineda tied the game with a two-out, solo home run to center field, his second homer of the series and third of the year. Justin Lebron followed with an infield single and raced to third on Ty Doucette’s single. Lebron then scored on a wild pitch to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead.

Quad Cities hit their first home run in the fourth inning, a solo shot by Austin Charles, to tie the game at 2-2. The River Bandits took the lead in the fifth on a two-out run-scoring double by Asbel Gonzalez to make it 3-2. Quad Cities took advantage of three Dragons errors in the sixth, scoring four runs in the inning, to increase their lead to 7-2, and they added another run in the eighth on Ben North’s home run to make it 8-2.

The Dragons took advantage of two walks and an error in the bottom of the eighth to score a run without a hit, but Quad Cities rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring.

Dayton collected six hits including two by Ryan McCrystal.

Carson Spiers started the game for the Dragons on a minor league injury rehab assignment. Spiers worked three and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

With Spiers in a starting assignment, Ovis Portes was moved to a bullpen role and struck out the first man he faced in the fifth before leaving the contest after two pitches to the next hitter due to an undisclosed injury. Portes left the game with a 2-0 count, the bases empty, and the score tied, but he was actually charged with the loss when the batter he was facing drew an eventual walk that was charged to Portes and then scored the tie-breaking run later in the inning.

Up Next: The Dragons (21-31, 60-58) do not play on Monday. On Tuesday, they will open a six-game road series at Fort Wayne (23-29, 50-68) at 6:35 pm. Deivi Villafana (0-3, 6.53) will start for the Dragons.
