Revis Goes Distance, Tortugas Erupt for 15 in Doubleheader Split

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Dusty Revis authored the first complete game by a Daytona pitcher in more than seven years in Saturday’s opener, while the Tortugas erupted for 15 runs and 14 hits in the nightcap as Daytona split a doubleheader with the St. Lucie Mets at Clover Park.

St. Lucie took Game One, 3-1, despite the historic effort from Revis, before Daytona answered with a 15-7 victory in Game Two to even the seven-game series at three wins apiece.

The Rundown

Game One

Revis turned in the finest and longest outing of his professional career, but one swing in the fourth inning proved to be the difference in a 3-1 Daytona loss.

The right-hander retired the first eight Mets he faced and did not allow a baserunner until Dylan Carey drew a two-out walk in the third. Daytona gave him the lead in the top half when Arnaldo Lantigua blasted a solo home run to left field, his ninth homer of the season, to put the Tortugas ahead 1-0.

Revis carried a no-hitter into the fourth before St. Lucie finally broke through. Aiden Robbins and John Smith III opened the inning with consecutive infield singles before Julio Zayas hit a three-run homer to left field, turning Daytona’s 1-0 lead into a 3-1 deficit.

That was the only damage against Revis.

He immediately settled back in, retiring the next three hitters to finish the fourth. After Elian Peña singled and Robbins walked in the fifth, Revis induced Smith III into an inning-ending double play. He then worked a perfect sixth on just three batters to complete the first six-inning outing of his career.

Revis finished with 6.0 innings, five hits, three runs, two walks and a strikeout on only 63 pitches, throwing 43 for strikes. His six innings shattered his previous career high of 4.2, established just one week earlier on Aug. 1 against Bradenton.

The complete game was the first by a Tortugas pitcher since Wendolyn Bautista went the distance on July 20, 2019 at Lakeland. It was also the first non-weather-shortened complete game by any Florida State League pitcher this season and just the second complete game in the league overall.

Daytona had opportunities to back Revis with more offense. Rafhlmil Torres doubled in the second but was caught stealing third, and the Tortugas later loaded the bases with two outs before coming up empty. Daytona put two more aboard in the fourth and collected three consecutive two-out singles from Jalen Hairston, Bernard Moon and Torres in the fifth, but an outfield assist at third ended that threat.

The Tortugas finished with seven hits and drew five walks but went just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10.

Game Two

Daytona wasted little time flipping the script in the nightcap, battling through a wild opening three innings before its offense completely took over in a 15-7 victory.

The Tortugas struck first when Hairston walked to open the game and later scored on a fielder’s choice from Moon, but St. Lucie answered with two runs in the bottom of the first against Alejandro Rivera, who was making his Reds organizational debut just five days after Cincinnati acquired him from the Cleveland Guardians at the trade deadline.

Daytona tied the game at 2-2 in the second when Anielson Buten singled, Ian Francis was hit by a pitch and Henry Hunter walked to load the bases. A passed ball during Hairston’s at-bat brought Buten home.

St. Lucie reclaimed a 3-2 lead on Simon Juan’s solo homer in the bottom half, but Daytona responded with its first major offensive eruption in the third.

Ichiro Cano walked and Torres singled before Drew Davies ripped a two-run triple to left field, putting Daytona ahead 4-3. Two batters later, Francis launched his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, extending the lead to 6-3.

The Mets answered immediately. A sacrifice fly and a two-run homer from Kuhio Aloy tied the game at 6-6 after three innings, ending Rivera’s debut after 3.0 frames.

From there, Daytona completely controlled the night.

Logan Tanner entered in the fourth and retired St. Lucie in order with two strikeouts before working around two singles in a scoreless fifth. The Tortugas rewarded him with three runs in the top of the fifth, all without the benefit of a run-scoring hit. Torres, Buten and Hunter all reached, while walks to Hairston and Lantigua and a wild pitch pushed Daytona ahead 9-6.

The knockout blow arrived an inning later.

Moon walked and stole second, Torres was hit by a pitch and Buten later reached before Francis walked to load the bases. With two outs, on the 11th pitch of the at-bat Hunter crushed a 3-2 offering over the right-field wall for his fourth home run and second grand slam of the season, suddenly stretching the advantage to 13-6.

Daytona was not finished. In the seventh, Cano singled and Torres doubled before Davies launched a two-run homer to right field, completing a four-RBI night and pushing the lead to 15-7.

The Tortugas finished with 14 hits, nine walks and three home runs. Torres went 3-for-3 with three runs and a double, Davies went 2-for-5 with a triple, homer and four RBI, Hunter reached four times and drove in four, while Cano and Buten each added two hits.

Tanner earned his first Single-A victory after 2.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts, while Abraham Gaitan handled the final two frames.
