Tourists Snap Drive's Winning Streak on Friday

Downs goes 3-4 with two RBI in defeat

Asheville, NC - The Greenville Drive's eight-game winning streak came to an end on Friday night, as the Asheville Tourists picked up a 4-2 victory in the opening game of the regular season's final series.


All of the offense on Friday came in the first three innings. The Drive (37-30, 78-58) took the lead in the top of the first when Jerry Downs singled home Carlos Tovar, who led off with a double.


The Tourists (37-30, 66-69) answered in the bottom half on an RBI single by Tyler Nevin, and they took a 2-1 lead after a run-scoring double by Ben Johnson in the second.


Downs struck again in the third, as he doubled with one out to score Brett Netzer, who began the inning with a single.


The tie game was short-lived, as Asheville scored twice against Darwinzon Hernandez (4-5) in the bottom of the third. Joel Diaz hit an RBI single to put the Tourists ahead for good, and Taylor Snyder followed with a double to bring home a second run.


Rico Garcia (2-2) got the win for the Tourists after striking out 10 in six innings while giving up just two runs, and Reid Humphreys nailed down his 13th save with a scoreless ninth.


Downs went 3-4 with both RBI to lead the Greenville offense, and Tovar added a pair of hits. Robby Sexton and Jared Oliver combined to keep the Tourists scoreless over the final four innings.


Game two of the four-game series begins at 6:05 PM on Saturday in Asheville. The Drive will send left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus (0-0, 2.70) to the mound, and right-hander Matt Dennis (7-6, 3.55) is the starter for the Tourists.
