Bulls Hold Off Stripers for Friday Win

Lawrenceville, GA --- Carson Williams and Austin Slater each drove in two runs, while Logan Workman tossed five shutout innings as the Durham Bulls held on to defeat the Gwinnett Stripers 5-4 on Friday night at Gwinnett Field.

Workman (W, 2-7) notched his first win of the season as a starter, logging five scoreless frames and fanning four.

The Bulls (29-19) moved ahead 1-0 in the first inning when Williams doubled home Jack Suwinski from first base with two outs. In the third, a sac fly by Williams brought home Tre Morgan to give the Bulls a 2-0 advantage.

Slater sliced a two-run double in the fourth against Gwinnett starter Drue Hackenberg (L, 1-2), placing the hit inches inside the right field line to bring home Logan Davidson and Homer Bush for a 4-0 lead.

The Stripers (23-26) got on the board in the sixth after Workman departed. John Rooney, pitching in his first game in two weeks, allowed all three hitters to reach before Cam Hill came in to replace him. Hill needed just five pitches to record a strikeout and a pair of flyouts, with a sac fly drawing the Stripers within 4-1.

Oliver Dunn singled home Williams in the eighth to provide the necessary insurance for a 5-1 lead, which was tested in the last of the eighth. With one out, Hunter Bigge walked two straight batters before Evan Reifert replaced him. Reifert surrendered a three-run homer to center from David McCabe to trim the Bulls' lead to 5-4. After Reifert recorded the final two outs, Owen Wild (S, 2) entered in the ninth, walking a batter with two outs before inducing a force out to close out Durham's second straight win.

Williams went 2-2 with two doubles, a walk and a sac fly to pace the offense.

With the win, Durham moved into sole possession of second place, leapfrogging St. Paul and Rochester, who both started the day in a first place tie. Only Indianapolis won on Friday, leaving the Bulls 1/2 game behind the Indians with 26 to play in the second half.

Mason Englert (0-6, 5.77) is expected to start on Saturday night against Cedric DeGrandpre (0-1, 5.82) at 6:05 PM ET.

Notes: Former Bulls catcher Logan Driscoll had his contract selected by the Miami Marlins ahead of their game on Friday night....Slater extended his hitting streak to seven straight with his two-run double in the fourth. Slater left the game in the bottom of the fifth, replaced by Jake Cave.... After not catching a game in over four months, Blake Sabol has caught two of the last three games.... Friday's game was delayed by 15 minutes from its original start time with the threat of inclement weather, which never occurred.
