SeaWolves' Sunday Rally Falls Short, Howlers Split Series with Curve

ERIE, PA - The Erie SeaWolves (26-13, 62-45) managed just one hit on Sunday afternoon in a 4-1 loss to the Altoona Curve (17-22, 48-60) to wrap up the six-game series at UPMC Park.

Kenny Serwa returned to the SeaWolves rotation after a short stint with Triple-A Toledo. The knuckleballer got into some early trouble as Altoona strung together three consecutive singles to start the game. Robert Hassell III's single in his Altoona debut brought in the first of two Curve runs in the frame.

Serwa worked around a pair of walks in the second inning to post a zero, but did not have the same fortune in the third. A leadoff walk followed by a Javier Rivas double set up a sacrifice fly that pushed the Altoona lead to 3-0.

Despite the early struggles, Serwa settled in and retired the final nine hitters he faced over five innings of work.

For the second time this week, Dominic Pipkin opened a bullpen game for the Curve with great success. After shutting out the SeaWolves on Tuesday, Pipkin worked two hitless innings to open Sunday's contest. Josh Loeschorn followed with three scoreless innings of his own.

Patrick Lee had the only hit for Erie in the third inning on a screaming line-drive to left field, but the SeaWolves outfielder was picked off second base to end the inning.

Altoona scored one final run of insurance in the eighth inning after Will Taylor led off the inning with a double and the Curve offense took advantage of a walk and two hit batters to extend the lead to 4-0.

The SeaWolves got on the board with two outs in the ninth when Thayron Liranzo scored on an error by Altoona third baseman Matt King.

Erie finished up the twelve-game homestand with a 7-5 record between the series with Akron and Altoona. The SeaWolves head to Connecticut to take on the Northeast Division first-half champion Hartford Yard Goats. First pitch for the series opener on Tuesday is set for 7:10 PM.
