Iowa Cubs Add Fan Safety Measure

Protective netting extended at Principal Park
February 27, 2020

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs have completed construction on protective netting running nearly the length of each foul line as an effort to increase fan safety at Principal Park.

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs have completed construction on protective netting running nearly the length of each foul line as an effort to increase fan safety at Principal Park.

The organization set their sights on this extension prior to a netting expansion in 2016 that saw the screening reach the ends of each dugout. The support poles on the initial project were engineered to withstand the weight and tension of the netting that was added for the 2020 season.
"We and the players want the game experience to be comfortable, safe, and interactive - especially for families and children," said Iowa Cubs Assistant General Manager, Randy Wehofer. "While fan awareness remains the best safety measure, when presented with the ability to extend netting that does not unduly obstruct sight lines, we decided to add screening to near the foul poles."
There were no mandates from MLB or MiLB for extended netting, but the Iowa Cubs, in conjunction with the City of Des Moines, felt that it was important to take this measure at Principal Park.
The netting extension cost roughly $90,000 and was funded by both the Iowa Cubs and the City of Des Moines.
The Iowa Cubs' 2020 home opener is slated for April 14 at 6:38 p.m. vs. San Antonio. Single-game tickets go on sale online at 8:30 a.m. on March 1. Fans can purchase tickets in-person at the Principal Park ticket office or by phone beginning March 2 at 8:30 a.m.
