MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The first-place Memphis Redbirds (74-46) came up short in the series opener against the New Orleans Baby Cakes (Marlins) Monday night at AutoZone Park, dropping the contest 4-2 despite churning out nine hits.
Peter O'Brien hit two home runs for New Orleans and drove in three of its four runs.
Tommy Edman, Carson Kelly, and Randy Arozarena had two hits apiece for the Redbirds, and Alex Mejia and Arozarena drove in the squad's runs.
Kevin Herget struck out eight without a walk in 7.0 innings, but he was hampered by the long ball. Conner Greene, Tommy Layne, and Landon Beck finished the game for the Redbirds in scoreless fashion.
Lane Thomas threw out a runner at the plate to end the ninth inning and keep the score 4-2, but the Redbirds went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the ballgame.
