RENO, Nevada - An 18-hit barrage blasted the Memphis Redbirds (26-36) to a 10-4 win in the series opener at the Reno Aces (Diamondbacks) Friday night in Reno, Nev.
Memphis has now won three of its last four games.
The first four hitters in Memphis' lineup combined for 14 of the team's 18 hits, with Edmundo Sosa and Max Schrock each having three hits in the one- and two-spots, and John Nogowski and Rangel Ravelo each having four-hit games as the third and fourth hitters in the order.
For the second-straight night Sosa was a single shy of the cycle, as he doubled, tripled, and homered. He has now homered in back-to-back games twice in the past week and has four long balls in his last six games.
Schrock, Nogowski, and Ravelo all set their season highs for hits with their outings, and Schrock scored a season-high three runs.
In addition to Sosa, Nogowski also homered, as did pinch-hitter Drew Robinson. Nogowski and Robinson's shots were two-run blasts, with Robinson's part of a five-run Memphis eighth inning that turned a 5-2 Redbirds lead into a 10-2 advantage.
On the pitching side, Evan Kruczynski earned his first Triple-A victory with 5.0 innings of work, allowing two runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Dominic Leone and Chris Beck followed with 3.0 shutout innings, and Tommy Layne tossed the ninth inning and allowed two unearned runs after a throwing error prolonged Reno's (26-35) frame.
Memphis' 18 hits were its second-most in a game this season, after the club had 24 at Nashville on May 3.
The Redbirds and Reno continue their four-game series tomorrow night at 9:05 (CT). Memphis' next home game is Wednesday at the start of a seven-game homestand.
