Riders Field Frisco, TX

The Frisco RoughRiders faced a 5-0 deficit as they came to the plate in the home half of the third inning Wednesday night at Riders Field in Frisco. A three-run rally would be the start of nine unanswered runs and a second consecutive win, 9-6, in the opening series of the 2021 season.

A four-run rally in the fifth would give Frisco the lead for good, highlighted by Sherten Apostle’s two-run double, as the Riders took a 7-5 lead. Frisco added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, the first of those on Steele Walker’s RBI triple (see below).

Tyler Ramirez ripped a three-run double in the third inning as the RockHounds took a 5-0 lead, but the RoughRiders bullpen shut the ‘Hounds down until the ninth (also see below).

Frisco has won the first two games of the season-opening six-game series which runs through Sunday in the Metroplex.

Kibbles & Bits

RockHounds designated hitter Jeremy Eierman blasted the first home run of the season for either club, a 400-plus-foot drive to left center in the top of the ninth.

Tyler Ramirez went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in.

Frisco has stolen eight bases (six on Opening Night) plus three triples (two for Texas Rangers prospect Bubba Thompson) in the first two games of the series.

The RoughRiders bullpen has been equally impressive, allowing a total of three runs (both in the opener) over a combined 11-and-two-thirds innings. In Wednesday’s game, between Tyler Ramirez’s two-run double in the third and Jeremey Eierman’s homer in the ninth, the Frisco bullpen retired 16 of 18 batters while the Riders took the lead.

Thursday’s RockHounds is a Lone Star State native and a former Texas Tech Red Raider. Ty Damron was born in Gordonville (he now makes his home in Ponder, TX) and was selected by the A’s in the 15th round of the 2016 draft out of Tech (he pitched for the Red Raiders in 2014-16). The left-hander had the best season of his pro career in 2019, posting a 1.81 ERA in a combined 26 relief appearances at the Single-A level (Beloit and Stockton).
