Sprouted from its' Granite State roots, the Space Potatoes mashes two components of New Hampshire history into the Fisher Cats' latest alternate identity. Beginning with its' out-of-this-world origins, the "Space" is derived from the historic Betty and Barney Hill incident: A Portsmouth couple who claimed America's first widely-known alien abduction in September 1961 off of Route 3 near Lincoln and Franconia Notch.
As for the spuds, it comes from another claim of "first" in the United States. New Hampshire is widely recognized as the first place in North America to culminate a white potato. In 1719, Scotch-Irish settlers planted the first white potato patch in what is now known as Derry, New Hampshire, using seed potatoes brought over from Ireland. In 2013, former NH Governor Maggie Hassan signed a bill declaring the white potato as the state's official vegetable, thanks to a fourth-grade class from Derry Village Elementary School.
