Two-Sport Athlete Amir Garrett Joins Dragons
DAYTON, OHIO-The Dayton Dragons announced the following roster changes today:
Left-handed pitcher Amir Garrett and right-handed pitcher Joey Housey have been promoted to Dayton from Billings (Class: Rookie, Pioneer League).
Right-handed pitcher Kyle McMyne has been promoted to Bakersfield (Class: Advanced-A, California League).
Right-handed pitcher Werleen Taveras has been placed on the disabled list.
The Dragons roster remains at the Midwest League limit of 25 players.
Garrett, at 6'5", is a two-sport athlete who was rated as the #15 prospect in the Cincinnati Reds organization prior to this season by Baseball America. He spent two seasons as a forward on the St. John's basketball team before announcing intentions to transfer to Cal State Northridge after the 2012-'13 season basketball season. As a baseball player, Garrett, 21, was drafted by the Reds in the 22nd round in 2011. At Billings this season, Garrett made five starts, going 1-1 with a 2.66 earned run average that currently ranks third best in the Pioneer League. He is a hard-thrower with a fastball that reaches the mid-90's.
Housey made eight relief appearances at Billings, going 0-0 with a 2.79 ERA. He struck out 15 and walked only two in 9.2 innings. He pitched in seven games for the Dragons earlier this season, going 1-1.
McMyne appeared in 10 games with the Dragons, notching three saves with a 3.09 ERA and a 0-0 record.
Taveras joined the Dragons on Wednesday but has not appeared in a game.
