Chris Dickerson and Chance Sisco both hit two-run homers, but a six-run fifth inning was too much to overcome as the Charlotte Knights rallied past the Tides 8-7 Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
Dickerson got the Tides on the board in the first frame, as he belted an opposite-field shot off of former Norfolk righty Steve Johnson to give the Tides a 2-0 advantage. Norfolk scored a run in the second on an RBI single by Chris Johnson, then extended its lead to 5-1 in the third when Sisco lofted an opposite-field homer for his sixth round tripper of the season.
Tides starter Tyler Wilson (6-8) entered the fifth frame carrying that 5-1 lead, but the Knights plated six runs and sent 11 men to the plate in the inning to charge to a 7-5 advantage. Wilson yielded back-to-back singles to open the frame before an RBI groundout by Jake Peter made the score 5-2. The UVA grad then issued consecutive walks to load the bases before Rob Brantly singled home a run to chase Wilson from the contest, ending a stretch of 10 consecutive starts in which he'd completed at least 5.0 innings.
Chris Lee entered in relief of Wilson, but Danny Hayes greeted him with a two-run single off the left field wall to knot the score at 5-5. The Knights later got a sacrifice fly from Casey Gillaspie and a run-scoring single from Jacob May - May's second hit of the inning - to take a 7-5 lead.
The Knights added a run in the sixth inning to take an 8-5 lead, but Norfolk pulled within 8-7 with a pair of runs in the eighth. Luis Sardiñas' third single of the contest plated Drew Dosch, and Mike Yastrzemski followed with a sacrifice fly to score Rubén Tejada to pull the Tides within a run.
Michael Ynoa kept the Tides off the board in the ninth, however, working around a two-out single to earn his first save of the season.
Jean Machi (4-0) earned the win with three shutout innings of relief.
Every Tides batter registered a hit in the contest, with Sardiñas leading the effort with his three-hit night. Ruben Tejada added two hits and two runs scored for Norfolk, which has now dropped five of six after winning 10 of its previous 15 games.
The two clubs will continue their four-game set on Wednesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. Mike Wright (3-6, 4.03) will make the start for Norfolk while Charlotte will counter with right-hander Tyler Danish (4-12, 5.28).
