Game Summary: The Oklahoma City Comets chipped away at the early lead built by the Sacramento River Cats Friday night, but would go on to an 8-6 loss at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The River Cats (24-25) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, including a grand slam by Jake Lamb. After Sacramento added a run on a wild pitch in the third inning, Oklahoma City’s Alex Freeland connected on a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to three runs. Austin Gauthier knocked a RBI triple into the right-field corner for the Comets to trim the score to 6-4 in the fourth inning before the River Cats added two more runs in the fifth inning. The Comets (29-20) went on to load the bases in the seventh inning with no outs and Ryan Ward brought in a run when he hit into a fielder’s choice before Michael Chavis connected on a sacrifice fly.
Of Note:
-Oklahoma City fell to 1-3 in the current series against the River Cats and the Comets have now lost four of the last five games overall as well as six of the last nine games.
-Alex Freeland hit his fourth home run of the season and OKC’s second through four games of the series against the River Cats. Freeland leads OKC with 35 RBI this season and has six RBI over his last five games.
-Esteury Ruiz extended his hitting streak to seven games, going 1-for-4 and scoring two runs. He is now 11-for-33 (.333) during the streak with four RBI and nine runs scored. The current streak matches his longest of the season (April 20-30).
-The River Cats scored eight runs for the third time in four games against OKC this week and have now scored 32 runs during the current series…Sacramento scored five runs in the first inning, putting together a five-run inning for the second time during the current series. It was the sixth time this season the Comets allowed five runs in an inning.
-Oklahoma City pitchers recorded 14 strikeouts, marking the third time this season the Comets racked up 14 or more strikeouts in a game and second time in a week (14 K’s, May 16 in Round Rock).
-Hunter Feduccia recorded the Comets’ lone multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored. It was his first multi-hit game of May and first since April 24 in Salt Lake.
-Jake Lamb hit a grand slam for Sacramento in the first inning, which was the first grand slam allowed by Oklahoma City this season and first allowed by OKC since July 1, 2024 in Las Vegas (Seth Brown). It was also the first grand slam allowed by OKC in a home game since Sept. 13, 2023 against Tacoma when Ryan Bliss hit one at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
-Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Michael Kopech continued his Major League Rehab Assignment with a scoreless sixth inning, retiring all three batters he faced with one strikeout in his fifth appearance with OKC this season. He was placed on the 15-day Injured List March 15 with a right shoulder impingement and transferred to the 60-day IL May 1.
-The Comets took the field as the Malmö Oat Milkers for one night, with jerseys and branding reflecting MiLB partner Oatly, the world’s original and largest oatmilk company.
