OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Dodgers will be known as Cielo Azul de Oklahoma City as part of Minor League Baseball's "Es Divertido Ser Un Fan®" ("It's Fun to Be a Fan®") campaign during the 2018 season, the team announced today.
The Dodgers are one of 33 teams across Minor League Baseball® to participate in the 2018 "Copa de la Diversión™," or "Fun Cup™," to better embrace the cultures and values of U.S. Hispanic/Latino fans in the community. Among the goals of the "Es Divertido Ser Un Fan" campaign are celebrating each community's multi-cultural fans and creating a culturally relevant gameday experience through music, concessions and promotions.
"We learned an invaluable amount during this process," said OKC Dodgers President/General Manager Michael Byrnes. "Thanks to the input of key members of the local Hispanic/Latino community, we were able to develop an identity that was inclusive of several cultures and provided an emotional connection for Hispanic/Latino fans."
The name Cielo Azul - translated to "Blue Sky" - was derived from three key factors:

  • Incorporating the color blue as part of the Dodgers organization.
  • The vibrancy of Oklahoma's blue skies, and the breadth of the diversity of Hispanic/Latino culture that resides under those skies.
  • A tribute to Dodgers legend Fernando Valenzuela, who looked up at the sky during his windup.

Cielo Azul will take the field during two separate four-game series against other teams participating in the campaign: May 31-June 3 vs. Omaha Cazadores de Tormentas and July 27-30 vs. El Paso Chihuahuas. The series will be known as ¡Celebración Cielo Azul! and will encapsulate other aspects of Hispanic/Latino culture at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, including music, live performances and special menu items at concession stands.
After ¡Celebración Cielo Azul! is complete, the Cielo Azul jerseys and caps will be auctioned off with proceeds benefitting a local non-profit Hispanic/Latino-focused organization.
The OKC Dodgers host their 2018 home opener April 10 vs. Round Rock to begin a seven-game homestand. Group tickets and season ticket packages are currently on sale, with single-game tickets on sale beginning March 21. For more information, please call (405) 218-1000 or visit okcdodgers.com.
