Red Sox Name Ben Cherington Executive VP/General Manager

The Boston Red Sox today named Ben Cherington the team's Executive Vice President/General Manager.

President/CEO Larry Lucchino made the announcement on behalf of the organization.

"Ben Cherington is one of the youngest 'veterans' in the game of baseball. He has already worked his way through every aspect of baseball operations, and over the years has gained a well-rounded set of experiences that will help him guide this franchise to its next World Championship. There is no one more prepared to take on the role of General Manager of the Red Sox than Ben," said Lucchino. "He will hit the ground running, in full stride, and no one will outwork him."

Cherington, who completed his 14th season in Major League Baseball and his 13th season in the Red Sox organization in 2011, has most recently served as Boston's Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager since January 2009. In that role, he worked closely with Theo Epstein on all Major League personnel matters, including evaluation and analysis, player acquisition, and contract negotiation.

The 37-year-old Cherington previously held the position of Red Sox Vice President/Player Personnel beginning in January 2006. He oversaw amateur scouting and player development in addition to consulting on all Major League player acquisitions. While in charge of the club's farm system, the Red Sox developed several players on the current Major League roster including Daniel Bard, Clay Buchholz, Jacoby Ellsbury and Jed Lowrie. Under his watch, Boston's 2006 draft was named the best in the Majors by Baseball America.

Cherington acted as Red Sox co-General Manager, along with Jed Hoyer, from December 12, 2005 through January 19, 2006. In that time, the Red Sox completed a trade that brought Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to Boston from the Florida Marlins.

He began his professional baseball career with the Cleveland Indians as an advance scout in 1998 and joined the Red Sox organization in 1999 as a Mid-Atlantic area scout before becoming a baseball operations assistant that May. Cherington has also served as Boston's coordinator of international scouting, assistant director of player development and director of player development.

During Cherington's tenure with the organization, the club has received numerous awards, including being named Sporting News' Team of the Decade following the 2009 season.

A native of Meriden, NH, Cherington pitched for Lebanon (NH) High School and graduated with a degree in English from Amherst College, where he played four years of varsity baseball. He also spent a year as an assistant coach for his alma mater while working towards his Master's Degree from the University of Massachusetts' Sport Management Program.

Cherington sits on the advisory board for Good Sports, a Boston-based non-profit that distributes sports equipment to community organizations offering programs to disadvantaged youth, and has run the Boston Marathon and the New York Marathon in support of the charity. He has also participated in the Pan-Mass Challenge, which benefits the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the 9K Run to Home Base, which raises funds for the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program.
