The River Cats 2018 home opener saw untimely miscues undo a valiant effort by starter Jose Flores. Even a monster home run from Mac Williamson could not overcome the Aces late-game rally, as the Sacramento River Cats (3-3) fell to the visiting Reno Aces (3-3) by a score of 7-2.
Right-hander Jose Flores struck out seven Aces in five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks. Reno tallied six hits after Flores came out of the game, and piled on an additional five runs. Four Reno hitters had multi-hit games highlighted by catcher Michael Perez, who went three-for-four with an RBI.
Mac Williamson extended his hitting streak to five games this season with a towering home run to straightaway center field in the 6th inning. Williamson also scored the only two runs of the night for Sacramento. Kyle Jensen accounted for the other RBI for the River Cats with a single in the 4th inning.
Throwing errors hurt the River Cats in the fourth, seventh, and eighth innings, all of which contributed to runs for the Aces. The River Cats aim to level the series tomorrow in game two of the series, with Casey Kelly (0-0, 0.00 ERA) taking the mound against Taylor Clarke (1-0, 0.00 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 PM and the game can be heard live online at rivercats.com and on the air on Money 105.5 FM beginning at 7:00 p.m.
- Williamson's 6th inning blast to center field traveled an estimated 404 feet, with an exit velocity of 111 MPH.
- Steven Duggar set the table from the leadoff position with two of the five River Cats hits and added his second stolen base of the season.
- Sacramento pitchers Jose Flores, Joan Gregorio, and Jose Valdez combined for 14 strikeouts, raising the team's total to 47 strikeouts in six games played (7.8 strikeouts/game).
