Wings out-played by Riders

Boggs 2-for-3 in shut out
April 17, 2013

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders shut out the Rochester Red Wings 7-0 Wednesday night at Frontier Field. Brandon Boggs went two-for-three with a walk on the night, including the Red Wings only extra base hit. The homestand and series continues Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.

The RailRiders got on the board early when David Adams singled in the top of the first, and was knocked in by a Zolio Almonte. Scranton kept it going in the second off Wings starting pitcher Liam Hendricks (0-1), when Melky Mesa hit a double. Mesa later scored from third after a ground ball was hit to third baseman Mark Sobolewski who made an erred throw home in attempt to get Mesa, which made the lead for the RailRiders 2-0.

Adams started the top of the third with a single and advanced to second after a throwing error by Wings first baseman Chris Colabello. Luke Murton hit a sacrifice fly to score Adams, which became the first unearned run the Wings have allowed of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Wings got a two out rally started, when Jeff Clement singled followed by a Boggs double. But Joe Benson grounded out to the first baseman to end the threat. All four of the Wings hits through the first four innings came with two outs.

In the top of the sixth the RailRiders added two runs on four hits to make the lead 5-0. During the inning Mesa got thrown out at home by Red Wings shortstop Ray Olmedo to prevent another run.

Righty Shairon Martis relived Hendricks in the top of the seventh. Hendricks gave up five runs in six innings of work while allowing nine hits and no walks.

Sam Demel came into relief in the bottom of the seventh for RailRiders starter Graham Stoneburner (1-1), who pitched a great game giving up only four hits through six innings, and striking out two. Demel continued the RailRiders' pitching dominance of the past few days, pitching the next one and two thirds innings and allowing just one hit, before being relieved by Juan Cedeno to finish the game.

Thomas Neal started the top of the eighth with a singled, then Bobby Wilson hit a two run home run off Martis to extend the lead 7-0. Martis then got into more trouble when he walked three straight batters with two outs, before inducing a grounder to end the threat.

Anthony Slama finished out the game for Rochester, pitching a perfect ninth inning and recording the only strikeout of the night for the Wings staff.

The Wings best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the ninth. Colabello and Clement laced together back-to-back singles with one out before Boggs worked a walk to load the bases. But a strikeout by Benson and a ground out by Sobolewski ended the night for the Wings.
