Wings Soar Over Mud Hens in Finale, 6-4

Nomar Mazara Collects Three Hits as Rochester takes five of six from Toledo

The Rochester Red Wings stormed back from a 3-0 deficit Sunday night and outlasted the Toledo Mud Hens 6-4 in the final game of a six-game series. The Wings added three runs in the fifth inning and reclaimed the lead in the sixth to notch their 5th win of the week. With the win, Rochester closes the book on their two-week road trip going 7-5 during that span.

Toledo broke the stalemate in the bottom of the third inning, scoring first for the fourth time this series. After the Mud Hens loaded the bases, a mishandled ground ball allowed two runs to score. 2B Andre Lipcius grounded into a fielder’s choice out in the next at bat, but brought in DH Kerry Carpenter for the third run of the inning.

Rochester hopped on the board in the top of the fifth inning to bring the score to 3-3. A walk and a single set up 2B Darren Baker, who drove in both C Drew Millas and SS Richie Martin with his second triple of the season, the first since 4/13. CF Derek Hill followed Baker up with an infield single that brought in the second baseman to even the score. The Wings jumped ahead the next inning when 1B Travis Blankenhorn’s RBI single scored 3B Carter Kieboom and gave Rochester a 4-3 lead. The Wings extended their lead when DH Luis Torrens nabbed an RBI single for his first run batted in this year as a member of the Red Wings.

The Mud Hens returned fired in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring a run off a double from 1B Michael Papierski and snapping LHP Alberto Baldonado’s scoreless outing streak in the process. RF Nomar Mazara’s double in the top of the seventh cushioned Rochester’s lead, driving in Hill to give them a 6-4 advantage.

RHP Paolo Espino took the mound for the Red Wings Sunday night and worked five innings in the win. Espino allowed two earned runs, striking out five, walking three and allowing four hits to the Mud Hens. After Baldonado allowed a run in his inning of work, RHP Hobie Harris worked a scoreless seventh inning. RHP Jose Ferrer struck out one while allowing a hit and a walk in 0.2 innings of work, and RHP Jordan Weems notched his third save in May and his first since 5/17.

RF Nomar Mazara is Sunday’s Diamond Pro Player of the Game after he went 3-for-5, including an RBI double that delivered an insurance run over Toledo. Mazara has recorded 18 hits in the last 15 games (5/12), just one behind Hill as the team leader during that span.

The Red Wings return home as they open up a six-game set at Innovative Field where they’ll take on the Syracuse Mets. RHP Jose Ureña is slated to start for the Wings on Memorial Day with RHP Alex Valverde getting the nod for the Mets. First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m.
