Wings, Stripers split twinbill

The Rochester Red Wings and Gwinnett Stripers split a Monday night doubleheader at Frontier Field. The Stripers edged the Wings 1-0 in the opener, and the Wings took the nightcap 2-1. The series continues with a 6:35 p.m. game Tuesday night. 

Game One:
Gwinnett scored the game's only run in the top half of the fourth after Ronald Acuna, Jr. started the inning with a leadoff walk. After Acuna stole both second and third base on consecutive pitches, Rochester starter Dietrich Enns surrendered an RBI groundout to Tyler Flowers which gave the Stripers a 1-0 lead.
Enns was tabbed with the loss as he went on to throw a complete seven inning game, allowing just one run on two hits while walking three and striking out four. Enns threw 85 pitches, 47 for strikes.
Mike Soroka also went the distance, allowing no runs on three hits while walking three and striking out three. Soroka threw 91 pitches, 57 for strikes.
Stripers third baseman Jose Bautista was 0-for-3 with a pair of flyouts and a strikeout while catcher Tyler Flowers, who is currently on a rehab assignment from Atlanta, finished the game going 0-for-2 with the game's lone RBI.

Game Two:
The Red Wings were the "road" team for the second game, as it was a makeup of a game postponed in Gwinnett April 15. Rochester went ahead in the top half of the first after Gwinnett starter Lucas Sims issued three straight walks to Nick Buss, Leonardo Reginatto, and Jake Cave. The Wings jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the fourth walk of the inning was issued to Brock Stassi, scoring Buss from third.
In the second, Jermaine Curtis lined a double into the left field corner before a two-out bloop single off the bat of Reginatto scored Curtis from second, putting the Wings ahead 2-0.
DJ Baxendale got the start for Rochester and set the tone early as he retired the first seven batters he faced.
In the top half of the fourth, Sims was lifted from the game after issuing consecutive walks. Sims went 3.1 innings allowing one run, while striking out four and walking six. Sims threw 75 pitches, 36 for strikes.
Baxendale was relieved by John Curtiss to start the bottom half of the fifth inning. Baxendale retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced during four innings of work allowing no runs on two hits. Baxendale threw 44 pitches, 28 for strikes. After a walk to Jaff Decker, Tyler Smith roped a double into the left field corner, scoring Decker from first to cut the deficit in half. With Smith on third with two away, Curtiss stuck out Jose Bautista to end the Gwinnett threat, leaving Rochester with a 2-1 lead.
Gwinnett was held scoreless in the sixth after a diving catch by Jake Cave limited the potential of a scoring threat. 
Casey Crosby made his Red Wings debut, working the seventh inning. After an infield single, Crosby got a lineout, flyout, then struck out Tyler Smith to end the game, It was Crosby's first professional save. 
Bautista was 0-for-3 with a strikeout as the designated hitter.

THIS DAY IN RED WINGS HISTORY
1999 - First baseman Julio Vinas had all three RBIs for the Red Wings as they defeated Buffalo 3-1 in the second game of a double header at Frontier Field. Vinas' RBIs came on a two run homer in the sixth and a double in the eighth.
THIS DAY IN INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE HISTORY
2005 - After the Buffalo Bisons jump out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning, Pawtucket bounces back in a big way in the top of the 2nd thanks in large part to catcher Kelly Shoppach. Shoppach hits the first pitch of the inning over the wall in right-center field off of Buffalo's Jeremy Guthrie, making it 4-1. After three hits, two walks, a hit-batsman, and two strikeouts, Shoppach returns to the plate with two on and two out. Once again Shoppach deposits a Guthrie offering beyond the wall in right-center. His second blast of the inning gives Pawtucket an 8-4 lead, and finally chases Guthrie from the game. The PawSox go on to win 14-5. Shoppach becomes just the second player in franchise history to club two homers in one inning (Dwayne Hosey, 8/10/96). Shoppach hit 26 long balls in 2005 and made his second straight IL Postseason All-Star Team.
