Seven Run Third Inning Gives Braves Opening Win

April 8, 2016

The Rome Braves defeated the Augusta GreenJackets 10-1 Thursday night at State Mutual Stadium before 3,820 fans. The ten runs scored were the most in a home opener in Rome history eclipsing the seven runs scored in 2009 against Savannah.

Rome never trailed in the game and scored their first run in the second inning on an RBI triple by Ray-Patrick Didder making it a 1-0 game. The GreenJackets tied the contest in the third on a run scoring double by Dylan Davis. The third frame saw the Braves plate seven runs highlighted by RBI singles from Austin Riley and Justin Ellison. A fielder's choice scored a run and a bases loaded walk added another score in the inning making it a 5-1 contest. Rome scored three more times in the inning on an RBI groundout and a two run single by Ronald Acuna. The Braves added runs in the fifth and eighth innings for the 10-1 final.

Rome pitching was strong with starter Mike Soroka going four innings, allowing one run and striking out seven. The bullpen was just as good with Dalton Geekie, Caleb Beech, and Bladimir Matos combining to shut down Augusta the rest of the way while striking out seven.

Geekie (1-0) gets the win and Michael Santos (0-1) the loss.
