Red Sox 7-5 Win Over SWB Yankees Spoils Record Crowd

Rochester, NY - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankee losing skid reached a season high four games on Sunday afternoon in front of a capacity crowd of 13,584 at Frontier Field. Pawtucket jumped on Yankee starter Andy Pettitte early, and the comeback effort was too little too late as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre dropped the game 7-5.

Ryan Lavarnway put the Red Sox on the board with an RBI double to left-center. Later in the inning, Lars Anderson extended the Pawtucket lead to 2-0 with an RBI single to right-center.

Pawtucket added another when Jose Iglesias drew a bases loaded walk making it a 3-0 ballgame.

The Red Sox scored two more in the fourth on a Tony Thomas double, and a Pedro Ciriaco sacrifice fly.

The Yankees offense awoke in the bottom half of the fourth inning. The first run of the game did not come without a high price. Brandon Laird grounded into a double play, but Colin Curtis was able to score from third. The next Yankee run came when Ronnier Mustselier sent one out to right field allowing Steve Pearce to score. Mustselier ended up on second, but was not credited with the RBI as the ruling was an error on Josh Kroeger in right field.

Colin Curtis brought the Yankees to within 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single up the middle.

Kroeger struck right back for the Red Sox with a solo homer to right field off of Juan Cedeno in the top half of the eighth inning.

The Yankees refused to go away. With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Mustselier roped a two-RBI single to right field scoring Jack Cust and Steve Pearce and bringing the Yankees to within one run at 6-5.

Pawtucket responded yet again in the top half of the ninth. With two outs in the inning Anderson found the third baseline for an RBI double, scoring Ciriaco from third and more importantly making it a two run game at 7-5.

Pettitte suffered the loss for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In five innings on the bump the lefty allowed five runs on eight hits. Of his five runs, just three were earned. He struck out five, while walking just two.

Doug Mathis improved to 1-2 on the season for the Red Sox. He allowed three runs on three hits in five innings on the mound. Garrett Mock picked up his fourth save of the season.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre fell to 14-14, while the Red Sox improved to 19-12.

The Yankees welcome the Columbus Clippers for the first game of a four game series. Manny Banuelos takes the hill for the Yankees, while fellow left-hander David Huff takes the mound for the Clippers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
