Mickey Mantle's Legacy Honored In Somerset

Bridgewater, New Jersey – While the Patriots are only in their sixth season as the New York Yankees Double-A affiliate, the team has long celebrated the storied tradition of their parent club.

On Friday, July 31 during Somerset’s fifth installment of Yankees Heritage Night, MLB Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle’s presence felt alive at TD Bank Ballpark. Mantle may not have been there donning his signature No. 7 jersey, but his spirit was present through captivating stories shared by his two living sons, David and Danny.

The crowd of 6,549 began lining up nearly four hours before the 7:05 PM first pitch to obtain a bobblehead of the Yankees icon before being treated to an on-field Q&A session featuring Mantle’s sons. Shortly after their arrival at the ballpark, wearing Patriots jerseys and Mickey Mantle caps, both David and Danny spoke to reporters about how much the night meant to their family and how their father’s legacy continues to be a driving force in the lives of new generations.

“I’m just really proud of him,” David said. “It’s not often somebody can sit here and their father be gone and live his dream.”

It has been nearly 60 years since Mantle played in the major leagues, but his 18-year career is well documented to an almost mythical extent - especially his statistical achievements and records. When reflecting on his impact, his sons are quick to point out he still has six active World Series records, including holding the most career home runs in the World Series (18).

“He was so proud of his career,” Danny said. “He basically played on one leg his whole career; but winning the triple crown, three MVPs – those types of things were very important to him. I think his favorite memory was the day that they retired his number seven.”

The numbers on the baseball card are immortal, and not just the ones you can find on the back of his historic 1952 Topps #311 card that sold for a record-breaking $12.6 million in 2022. With a .298/.421/.557 career slash line alongside 536 homers and 1,509 RBI, the 20-time All-Star and seven-time World Series champion’s total body of work has consistently ranked him as one of the top players of all time.

“On his plaque [in Monument Park in Yankee Stadium] it says, ‘A Great Teammate,’” Danny said. “When you listen to old interviews of Yogi [Berra], Dad and Whitey [Ford], they talk about how close they were and how much of a family that they were back then.”

Just as Danny finished laying out the tight knit community his father’s career had afforded their family, Eddie, the oldest son of Hall of Fame pitcher Whitey Ford, quietly walked into the luxury suite and greeted the Mantle brothers with an embrace.

It was that comradery that both Danny and David believed kept Mickey wearing the pinstripes for his entire career.

“It was because of the guys that he played with,” Danny said. “He was a little bit younger than Yogi and Whitey and he just cherished Hank Bauer, who roomed with him when he first came up. He loved being the little brother, so to speak, and so they taught him everything.”

Friday night wasn't just proof that Mantle remains one of baseball's most beloved figures, but it was a sense of family that he found with the Yankees that continues to echo decades later. It is a core value that the Kalafer family has operated under in Somerset, fostering a culture where players, staff and fans are treated as part of something larger than baseball.

The celebration wasn't simply a tribute to a legend, but instead a reminder that the strongest legacies are not only built on greatness, but on the relationships that endure long after the final out.
