BRIDGEWATER N.J. - As the Yankees and Red Sox prepare to lock horns for the second time in as many weeks this weekend, the Double-A affiliates will renew their rivalry as well. The Somerset Patriots (25-31) will host the Portland Sea Dogs (28-26) for a seven-game series beginning today at TD Bank Ballpark.
Portland enters the series on a five-game losing streak, dropping the Sea Dogs to nine games behind the division leader. Somerset, meanwhile, lost five of six games to first-place Binghamton last week, falling 13 games back with only 13 games remaining in the first half of the Eastern League season.
Many of the stars now at the forefront of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry at the Major League level got an early taste of the matchup in Double-A. Notable names such as Austin Wells, Anthony Volpe, Jasson Domínguez, Ben Rice, Kristian Campbell, Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer have all competed in the Double-A edition of the rivalry over the past three seasons.
This week’s series in Bridgewater is expected to feature no shortage of top prospects who could soon join that list. Following a wave of recent promotions that reshaped the roster, Somerset enters the week with eight of the Yankees’ top 30 active prospects. Portland, meanwhile, brings six of the Red Sox’s top 30 active prospects.
Here are some of the latest news, notes and storylines surrounding the Patriots ahead of this week’s action.

"Non Si Può Stopparlo!" : Prior to the series starting on Tuesday, the Yankees announced that DH Giancarlo Stanton is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Somerset this week. The 35-year-old was placed on the 10-day injured list on March 26 and was transferred to the 60-day injured list on May 1 with right and left elbow epicondylitis. In last year's playoffs, Stanton recorded seven homers and a 1.048 OPS in 14 games, earning the ALCS MVP and helping the Yankees make the World Series for the first time since 2009.

You’re a Roc Star: Among the notable players that shuffled levels last week was infielder Roc Riggio getting the bump up from Hudson Valley to Somerset. The 22-year-old Riggio, who was a fourth-round draft selection out of Oklahoma State two years ago, has been as advertised in his first week at Double-A. In five games against Binghamton, Riggio went 7-for-22 with four home runs, including two in the series finale on Sunday, to go with seven RBI and a stolen base. While Riggio showed off his offensive prowess, he also made several highlight reel plays defensively at second base.

The Yankees No. 24 prospect has now blasted 11 HR in a mere 27 games this season after hitting 11 across 106 contests last year. He is now slashing .280/.410/.680 across High-A and Double-A.
La-great.@Yankees No. 17 prospect Carlos Lagrange's Double-A debut is in the books!
— Somerset Patriots (@SOMPatriots) June 7, 2025
Lagrange has punched out at least six batters in each of his nine starts across Single and Double-A this season.

Lagrange Debut: Last Tuesday, right-hander Carlos Lagrange joined Somerset and made his highly anticipated Double-A debut last Friday. The Bombers' No. 17 prospect allowed just 3 R on 4 H while recording 6 K over 6 IP. The 22-year-old Dominican-product has now fanned at least six batters in each of his nine starts this season and has punched out 70 in just 47.2 innings of work and posting a stellar 1.01 WHIP.

Got Brock Back: Left-handed pitcher Brock Selvidge made his long-awaited return to the Somerset rotation last Saturday. The Yankees' No. 8 prospect began the season on a rehab assignment and had not pitched in Somerset since July 6, 2024. The southpaw tossed 64 pitches over three innings against Binghamton – he allowed 2 ER on 4 H with 3 K and 3 BB.
Congratulations to Brendan Jones (@Yankees No. 29 prospect) on collecting his first Double-A RBI! pic.twitter.com/2FtTcDhn5Y

Speed Kills: Outfielder Brendon Jones joined Somerset last week along with Riggio and Lagrange from Hudson Valley. In 49 games this season, Jones has stolen 23 bases, which leads the organization. Trailing right behind Jones is top prospect George Lombard Jr. (19).
Knowing the Opponent: The Patriots will meet with Portland for the second time in less than a month after the Sea Dogs took three-of-five from Somerset in mid-May in a rain-filled series in Bridgewater. Although the Patriots are eliminated from winning the Northeast Division in the first half, the Sea Dogs enter this set nine games back of Binghamton.
The Sea Dogs have plenty of talent with six active prospects in the Red Sox top 30, which is highlighted by right-hander David Sandlin. The 24-year-old was acquired from the Royals last February and has emerged as one of the better arms in a strong Boston system. In 9 starts this season for Portland, the Oklahoma-product has posted a 3.86 ERA and has fanned 51 batters in 49 innings of work.
Series Pitching Probables:
Tue: RHP David Sandlin (3-2, 3.86 ERA) vs. RHP Brendan Beck (4-2, 2.27 ERA)
