Toledo, OH- The Toledo Mud Hens (73-74) defeated the Louisville Bats (65-82), 4-1, on Saturday, September 19, in game five of the series. Toledo didn’t allow a Louisville run until the eighth inning as the Hens pitching staff retired one Bat after another through much of the contest.
On a rehab assignment from Detroit, RHP Jack Flaherty, started on the mound for the Hens. Flaherty hit two Bats with pitches and allowed a single, but a double play by the infield kept the slate clean.
Both clubs tallied a single in the second inning, but the game remained scoreless. Flaherty’s day ended after 2.1 innings and striking out three. Andre Granillo stepped onto the bump from the bullpen for the last outs of the frame.
Trei Cruz doubled to lead off Toledo’s third then Max Anderson followed with the same. Anderson’s swing brought in Cruz and Toledo’s first run. (1-0)
Brenan Hanifee made an appearance on the mound for the fourth. He struck out a pair in his single inning of work. Austin Gomber pitched the next four and the Mud Hens bullpen continued to shut out the Bats.
Jace Jung smashed his 22nd home run of the season as leadoff in the fifth (2-0). After Anderson drew a walk, James Outman sent a double to the right field wall that allowed run three came home. (3-0)
Gomber retired six consecutive Bats through the sixth and seventh stanzas. When Toledo stepped up to the plate, a walk and singles from Justice Bigbie and Andrew Navigato added run number four to the board (4-0), Bigbie’s swing brought in the run.
Toledo’s shutout ended in the eighth when two singles and a fly out landed Bats on the corners. The next batter at the plate grounded one into a force out but a run still came across. (4-1)
Tyler Mattison relieved Gomber for the final inning. Louisville failed to catch Toledo with the three outs it had remaining and the Hens walked away from game five on top.
The Mud Hens are back at Fifth Third Field on Sunday, September 20, for game six vs. the Bats and the final game of the 2026 season. First pitch is set for 2:05p.m. and Toledo looks to conclude its season on a high note.
